$15 Million Mansion Teetering on Edge of Cliff After Landslide

Earlier this month, residents in hillside homes up and down the state of California had their homes and properties destroyed by landslides and mudslides caused by intense rain storms. The soil in many areas remains saturated with water, meaning homes could still be at risk of potential disaster. Some seaside mansions in the city of Dana Point are currently sitting on the edge of an eroding cliff and could meet the same fate as Thelma and Louise.
Footage captured by KABC showed the severity of the situation. Three multimillion-dollar homes are on the edge of a massive bluff that partially gave way over the weekend. The largest is worth approximately $15.9 million, while the homes next door are worth $14.1 million and $12.9 million, according to Redfin.
All three abodes are precariously perched on the edge of the cliff, but despite the apparent danger, the city of Dana Point inspected the homes and determined there is no immediate threat to all three properties. KABC spoke to one of the homeowners who declined to appear on camera, but he told the news network that his home is secure and has not been red-tagged by the city.
Dana Point City Manager Mike Killebrew reassured locals that everything is fine, not just for the homeowners, but for anyone who wants to go to the beach below where the rocks and other debris fell. “There are no structures jeopardized at this point, and it looks like no impact on the lateral beach access,” Killebrew told The Orange County Register.
One Dana Point resident, however, isn’t convinced. “I would be concerned if I lived in one of those homes,” local Jan Cocchiara told KABC. “I don’t know if it’s because of all the development that the hill’s been compromised.”
As for what can be done, Cocchiara threw his hands up. “I’m not an engineer,” he said. “I don’t know what needs to be done, but apparently something is going to happen. I guess we’ll find out.”
