The Beckhams are getting real about some of the “hardest” parts of their marriage in the new docuseries Beckham, out today on Netflix. For years, the couple has denied claims that David Beckham had an affair back in 2003 while playing for Real Madrid. While they stayed vague about the details in the doc, the couple spoke about how that period of their lives had a detrimental effect on their relationship.

“It was the hardest period for us because it felt like the world was against us,” Victoria Beckham admitted. The world-famous couple didn’t go into specifics about what happened, but they reflected on how the events rocked the foundation of their marriage

“Here’s the thing: we were against each other if I’m completely honest,” she confessed. “You know, up until Madrid, sometimes it felt like us against everybody else. But we were together, we were connected, we had each other. But when we were in Spain, it didn’t really feel like we had each other either. And that’s sad.”

Feeling like she had no one despite being married to one of the most widely known athletes in the world wasn’t easy, to say the least. “I can’t even begin to tell you how hard it was and how it affected me,” she said

The media frenzy at the time was fueled by rumors of infidelity. This added insult to injury, as the family couldn’t live their lives in peace whenever they left the house.

“It was a nightmare,” she remembered. “From the minute we opened the door in the morning, the press were there in cars and everywhere we went, we would get followed.”

“It was an absolute circus—it’s really entertaining when the circus comes to town, right? Unless you’re in it,” the ex-Spice Girl contended.

When asked if she resented her husband at the time, she was frank with her answer. “If I’m being totally honest, yes I did,” she said. “It was probably, if I’m being honest, the most unhappy I have ever been in my entire life.”

David, for his part, spoke on how the rumors around his alleged cheating affected him and his family behind the scenes.

“There was some horrible stories that were difficult to deal with,” he recounted. “It was the first time that me and Victoria had been put under that kind of pressure in our marriage.”

It was less about drifting apart and more about having trouble dealing with their entire lives being under a magnifying glass. “I think we both felt at the time that we were not losing each other, but drowning,” he shared. “I don’t know how we got through it, in all honesty.”

David’s reported extramarital activities being the cause of all this hurt took a toll on the superstar soccer player.

“Victoria is everything to me. To see her hurt was incredibly difficult, but we’re fighters and at that time we needed to fight for each other and we needed to fight for our family and what we had was worth fighting for,” he explained. “There were some days that I would wake up and think, ‘How am I going to go to work? How am I going to work on to that training pitch? How am I going to look like nothing’s wrong?’ I felt physically sick every day when I opened my eyes. ‘How am I going to do this?'”

The Beckhams today are a tight-knit family with four children in their late teens and early twenties. Their second child, 21-year-old Romeo, is following in his dad’s footsteps, currently playing as a forward for Brentford F.C. David, meanwhile, is focusing on building and opening Miami Freedom Park, his massive new soccer stadium complex nearly a decade in the making.
