Kuhl’s Renegade Pants Are ‘as Durable as They Are Comfortable,’ and Now They’re Under $50

Outdoor gear has made its way into casual wardrobes the same way military apparel and workwear were adopted as everyday menswear. What started as the Gorpcore trend has now transcended trendiness. Many have accepted that a Patagonia jacket or a North Face backpack can be wardrobe essentials just as easily as a military bomber jacket or a pair of blue jeans. The same is true for hiking pants, and recently, a popular pair at REI was marked down to less than $50.
We’ve written about Kuhl’s hiking pants before; they’re versatile, durable, and stylish. Right now, REI is offering Kuhl’s Renegade Rock pants for half off. Typically $99, you can now snag these pants for $49. There are seven colors to choose from, including Teak and Ink Black, but sizes are selling out fast.

Kuhl’s Renegade pants have features that are specific to climbing and hiking but are useful in any context. The fabric is a stretchy, breathable blend of nylon and spandex, and the fit is tapered. The fabric also has a UPF 50+ rating and a DWR coating for sun and rain protection, respectively. Stitching at the knees allows for a full range of movement, whether you’re hiking, climbing, biking, or simply crammed into a tiny airplane seat.
The pants are loaded with cleverly designed pockets that don’t take away from their slim, streamlined look. There are two front hand pockets, two secure zippered side pockets, two small slip pockets, and two back pockets (for those keeping score at home, that’s a total of eight pockets). There’s also a convenient drawstring at the ankles that cinches the pants for extra protection from twigs and snags on the trail.

REI shoppers have been impressed with the versatility of these hiking pants, with one calling them “excellent for travel and work,” and another writing that they’re “as durable as they are comfortable.” One shopper was particularly impressed with the functionality of the pockets when traveling, writing that the zippered side pockets were “GREAT for travel—passport in one, emergency cash in the other.”
Shoppers also found that the pants performed well in different climates. “They’re light enough to be bearable on a blazing hot day, enough room to wear long johns underneath when it’s below freezing,” one shopper said. Another called them “cool in warm weather,” while another wrote, “We spent five days in San Fran where it is chilly and wore these almost every day. We also visited four national parks and these were great, especially when it rained.”
Whether you’re cragging, hiking, or catching a flight, Kuhl’s Renegade pants are built for comfortable movement. At just $49, they’ll leave plenty of cash in your pocket (or rather, pockets). But act fast—because this style is discontinued, once it’s out of stock, it’s gone.
