Divers Find Bricks of Cocaine Branded With Nike Logo on Ocean Floor

Florida’s reputation as a cocaine trafficking hotspot dates back decades, but recent discoveries in the state have indicated that the waters off the Sunshine State are still a popular route for the drug trade. The most recent find in the Florida Keys was quite unique, to say the least. 

Divers were exploring the ocean off Key Largo on June 5 when they stumbled upon what they believed to be garbage on the ocean floor approximately 100 feet below the surface. According to a statement from law enforcement, it actually turned out to be 25 bricks of what is suspected to be cocaine. Even stranger was that every package was branded with a fake Nike logo and the words “Nike SB.” 

“The Sheriff’s [Office] responded to the Rainbow Reef Dive Center in Key Largo at approximately 12:25 p.m. where divers stated they were removing what they thought was trash when the discovery was made,” the police statement read. 

It’s the latest discovery of suspected narcotics in Florida waters. Just last month, a beachgoer in the Keys found about 65 pounds of cocaine worth approximately $1 million, according to The Miami Herald. Last year, nearly 150 pounds of the drug washed up on Big Pine Key, and other packages worth a total of more than $100,000 appeared on beaches across the Florida panhandle. 

Perhaps the most stunning discovery, however, was one made by the mayor of Tampa herself. Last August, Mayor Jane Castor was on a fishing trip with her family when she reeled in a whopping 70 pounds of cocaine.
