Easy Honey Mustard Dipping Sauce (5 mins!)

Is there anything more life-changing than homemade dips? (Actually, don’t answer that.) This easy-as-pie Honey Mustard Dipping Sauce takes five minutes and only a few ingredients to make. Before long (heck, before short!) you’ve got a flavor bomb that you will prefer over any of those store-bought types. It is a great alternative if you want to change from my delicious Tzatziki or butter chicken dip.

Throwing a shindig? Planning a game-day binge? Or maybe just a snuggly solo dinner? This will hit any cuisine curveball out of the park because it can adjust to every kind of food, be it BBQ, seafood, crispy veggies or salads.

And you can even use it as a dressing. There’s a very good chance you’ll run out once people realize how good it is and overload their veggies and chips with it.

Is This Honey Mustard Dipping Sauce Healthy?

  • This sauce has no preservatives — not like those lining the shelves at the grocery store.
  • Sitting on the sidelines with the preservatives are the added sugars. You can skip the guilt trip because this dressing has nature’s sweetener in the honey.
  • Honey is a nutritional powerhouse, too. It contains antioxidants, can help with digestion, and even gives your immune system a little boost. That’s why I recommend using a high quality honey to boost the benefits (looking at you Manuka honey!).

INGREDIENTS

I recommend sticking to this ratio for now, then experimenting once you’ve tried the completed dressing.

  • ¼ cup Dijon mustard
  • ¼ cup honey
  • ½ cup low-fat mayonnaise
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice
  • ½ tsp cayenne pepper

INSTRUCTIONS

Whisk

Whisk the ingredients together in a bowl until smooth.

Tips & Tricks

  • Use good-quality honey and mustard for the best flavor. Raw or organic honey can add a depth of flavor, and Dijon mustard tends to work best over your run-of-the-mill yellow variety.
  • Add more honey or mustard to adjust the sweetness and tanginess of the sauce.
  • I always refrigerate the dressing for 30 minutes before serving. It lets the flavors blend well together.

Variations

  • For a vegan twist, substitute maple syrup or agave nectar for honey.
  • Swap out the mayo for Greek yogurt or sour cream. Your dressing will stay creamy but this will add a nice zing to it.
  • You can also add a splash of apple cider vinegar or a few drops of Worcestershire sauce. It gives a nice and complex flavor profile. I even put once minced shallots for a hint of onion flavor, it worked well.

Serving Suggestions

I have so many recipes that call for honey mustard something that you should have no problems finding new and exciting ways to use this as a dressing or a dip.

Why not make Almond-Crusted Chicken Bites and include a ramekin of dressing on the side? Or you can use it as a marinade for Chicken Skillet. Making a sandwich for lunch? I recommend my Superfood Greek Yogurt Chicken Salad Sandwich. Add this dressing instead of mustard or mayo and get the best of both worlds. Or use it in a wrap, like this Zucchini Noodles Blueberry Basil Wrap.

FAQs

Can I use any type of mustard?

Yes, you can use any type of mustard you prefer. Dijon mustard works well, but you can also try whole-grain or spicy mustard.

How do I make this sauce spicier or milder?

If you like it hot, add in some extra cayenne pepper but be careful not to add too much or it will overshadow the honey and mustard. To go the other way, just skip the cayenne or reduce the amount you add.

Can I use this sauce for marinating meat?

Absolutely! It makes a great marinade for chicken, pork, or even tofu.

How to Store Honey Mustard Dressing

I usually use a mason jar and store in the fridge for 3 weeks. If you have lots of dressing and want to freeze some, I’ve poured it into an ice cube tray. This way, you only need to thaw individual servings. Once the cubes are frozen, transfer them to an airtight container or a freezer-safe bag. They should keep for up to 3 months.
