G-Shock and Land Cruiser Just Launched the Hardiest Off-Road Watch Ever

Car brands teaming up with watchmakers is nothing new. Both fields are propelled by an obsessive fascination with distance, time, and speed—further defined by measurements like quality, durability, and style. The latest big collaboration of this sort—between Land Cruiser and G-Shock—is inspired by arguably the most rigorous test of all these elements combined into one beast of a race: the Dakar Rally.

The Dakar Rally, for those unaware, is an off-road race that once took place from Paris, France, to Dakar, Senegal. After security threats canceled the 2008 rally, the event moved to South America for 10 years, before settling in Saudi Arabia, where it is held today. Through all its relocations, it remains one of the most challenging off-road endurance tests on the planet, with single stages reaching up to 560 miles per day and the entire course reaching over 6,000 miles.

In celebration of the Dakar Rally, G-Shock teamed up with Team Land Cruiser (TLC) Toyota Auto Body to launch the Mudman GW9500TLC. The new Mudman features a black and red color scheme inspired by the Land Cruiser 300 GR Sport, the car raced by TLC in the Dakar Rally,

The G-Shock is the perfect partner for the Dakar Rally, as both revolve around extremes of toughness and resilience. The original watch featured 10 years of battery life, 10 bar water resistance (100 meters), and could survive a fall of 10 meters. The latest Mudman takes it to a whole new level, featuring 200 meters of water resistance as well as mud and shock resistance,  plus a Carbon Core Guard structure and solar power.

The watch is on the large side, with a bio-based resin case measuring 52.7 mm and a stainless steel bezel. Sustainability is at the heart of the watch, as the bio-based resin is derived from renewable organic resources, reducing the watch’s environmental impact. That ethos extends to the packaging, which incorporates recycled materials.

The Team Land Cruiser logo graces the case and the sand-colored band, which also features splashes of black. Additionally, the logo appears on the face of the watch when the LED backlight is illuminated.
