Greek Fava (Split Pea Dip)

If you enjoy creamy, garlicky hummus, then you’re going to love this split pea dip!

Greek Fava (Split Pea Dip)

Traditionally, this delectable dip is made with Fava beans from a fertile Greek island called Santorini. But since then, the high cost of traveling there has made yellow split peas a more affordable and accessible option. You’d be surprised by how creamy-dreamy this dip gets, and the naturally earthy flavors blend to create a spread that goes as good on crackers, sandwiches, and bowls of all kinds. Not only that, but it’s incredibly easy to whip together, whether you’re curbing a quick craving or creating a big fat Greek picnic!

One of the best aspects of this recipe is that the longer it sits, the more the flavors harmonize. It turns out like a lemony split pea soup in velvety sauce form, and what could be better on a summer afternoon? Pop a pita in the oven at 350 degrees F for 5-10 minutes, chop some fresh veggies for dipping, and you’re good to go!

Is Greek Fava (Split Pea Dip) Healthy?

This dip is hearty in more ways than one! Split peas are packed with protein, fiber, vitamins, and minerals. With such basic yet wholesome ingredients, this recipe doesn’t only fit the lean-and-green Mediterranean diet, but it’s also gluten-free, sugar-free, and vegan. Bring this to a diverse party or picnic, and it’s sure to be a holistic hit!

Play with the Flavors

While Greek Fava is stellar on its own, there are many ways to kick it up a notch or give it a good twist that might inspire you.

When I make split pea dip, I like to add 1 teaspoon of cumin and 1 teaspoon of paprika. I also recommend caramelizing some white onions on a medium-heated stove to combine at the end; this smoky-sweet flavor is the perfect addition to an already smooth profile. Similarly, you could also sauté up some red bell peppers.

My favorite garnishes are chopped onions and black olives, but you can experiment ’til you find what best tickles your tastebuds!

FAQs & Tips

How to Make Ahead and Store

In a fridge-safe container, this dip keeps well for up to 7 days, so it’s a great homemade condiment to have ready for meal prep. Pack it in your lunches or snack on it throughout the week! You can also store it in a freezer-safe bag in the freezer for up to 3 months; just make sure to thaw in the fridge overnight before serving. And, of course, it’s best served cold.

Hummus vs. Fava

While fava is traditionally made with yellow split peas, hummus is made with chickpeas. Hummus is typically richer and creamier, thanks to the addition of tahini and olive oil, while fava is lighter and smoother with a bright, tangy flavor. Both dips share common ingredients like garlic and lemon juice, making them perfect complements for a Mediterranean picnic.

What about “Mezze”?

The “mezze” is a classic Greek platter that features other dips like hummus and tzatziki, as well as fava dip. In this way, it’s usually garnished with olives, smoked paprika, and a drizzle of olive oil. In Greek, the word “mezze” means “bite” or “taste” and has become a common way to serve delectable dips like this one.

Serving Suggestions

Other than toasted pita bread or chips, you can dip almost anything in this creamy goodness.

I especially enjoy slathering it on avocado grilled cheese with a slice of tomato and some sautéed spinach, which is full of good fats and fiber.

You can also spread it on Crispy Air Fryer Eggplant for a modern twist on a classic Mediterranean veggie.
