Larry David Shares Heartfelt Tribute to Richard Lewis After His Death

The death of beloved comedian and frequent Curb Your Enthusiasm star Richard Lewis has led to an outpouring of grief among fans and loved ones who knew him well. That includes Curb creator and longtime friend Larry David. 

Both David and Lewis were born at the Brooklyn Jewish Hospital in the summer of 1947. It was only fate, then, for the two comedians to develop a great friendship and an unbreakable bond. In a statement shared by HBO, the Curb Your Enthusiasm mastermind mourned the loss of his friend while also getting a joke in. 

“Richard and I were born three days apart in the same hospital and for most of my life he’s been like a brother to me,” David said. “He had that rare combination of being the funniest person and also the sweetest. But today he made me sob and for that I’ll never forgive him.”

In the more than two decades since Curb Your Enthusiasm first premiered, Lewis has appeared on the show as a fictionalized version of himself more than three dozen times. His most recent appearance was just days before his death on the Feb. 18 episode. Coincidentally, in that episode, Lewis discussed putting David in his will.

Cheryl Hines, who played David’s wife on the show, also shared her sentiments on his passing, telling People that being loved by him was “a true gift.”

“Through the years I learned who Richard really was and the gifts he gave,” she said, calling him “one of the most loving people I know.” “He would take time to tell the people he loved what they meant to him—especially in recent years,” she added. “In between takes on Curb, he would tell me how special I was to him and how much he loved me.”

“I love you Richard,” she concluded. 

Curb Your Enthusiasm is coming to an end this season, and Lewis’ legacy is now forever tied the show’s.
