LeBron James’ son Bronny is following in his father’s footsteps by pursuing a career in basketball. The 19-year-old freshman plays for the University of Southern California, but his journey to the court hasn’t been an easy one. Back in July of this year, Bronny suffered a cardiac arrest during a team practice and had many wondering not only if he would return to basketball, but if he’d even make it to the Trojans’ first game.

In just a few months, Bronny has made astounding steps in his recovery. Now, with the blessing of medical professionals, he’s ready to get back out on the court and play.

“Bronny James is now cleared by his doctors for a full return to basketball,” a James family spokesperson told The Athletic in a statement. “Bronny will have a final evaluation with USC staff this week, resume practice next week, and return to games soon after.”

Needless to say it hasn’t been an easy battle for the entire family, not just Bronny. “The James family would like to express their gratitude to the incredible medical team, the entire USC community, and especially the countless friends, family, and fans for their love and support,” they said, quoting the Trojans’ motto, “Fight On!”

Since the incident, Bronny has been benched from any team activities, from practice to traveling with the team overseas for games in Greece and Croatia this summer. Last month, his dad shared a promising update on his recovery and testified to his quick recovery. “Bronny’s doing extremely well,” the four-time NBA champ said at the time. “He has began his rehab process to get back on the floor this season with his teammates at USC [thanks to] the successful surgery that he had. He’s on the up-and-up.”

“It’s definitely a whirlwind and a lot of emotions for our family this summer, but the best thing we have is each other,” he added. “We stuck behind each other and gave Bronny strength during the whole process. We’re happy to see where he is today, and we look forward to seeing what his future still has in store for him.”

It’s unclear when exactly Bronny will return to the court, but it looks like it’ll be sooner rather than later. The Trojans are set to face off against the Gonzaga University Bulldogs on Dec. 2.
