Jimmy Donaldson, aka Mr. Beast, took to X (formerly Twitter) on Monday with an offer to pay 10 fans $25,000 each just for reposting one of his tweets. According to the prolific YouTuber, whose page was the most followed on the platform in 2023, he’ll choose the lucky winners in 72 hours. Mr. Beast is giving away the money after making an unexpected windfall off a single video he posted to X.

I’m gonna give 10 random people that repost this and follow me $25,000 for fun (the $250,000 my X video made)

I’ll pick the winners in 72 hours

On January 15, Mr. Beast uploaded a 16-minute video to see how much ad revenue he could generate through X. The video, his first on the platform, quickly racked up views. On January 18, Mr. Beast commented, “100 [million] views? Dang lol.”

Even as the eyes poured in, commenters warned Mr. Beast away from the X route. “You’re gonna get $16.35 out of posting this on X and Elon is gonna say it’s your fault,” wrote @IcyVert.

$1 Car vs $100,000,000 Car!!!

I’m curious how much ad revenue a video on X would make so I’m reuploading this to test it. Will share ad rev next week ❤️ pic.twitter.com/amSSmddFht

The following day, the views had increased even more. Mr. Beast took the rather coy approach of posting asking his followers how much ad revenue they believe the 124,000 views generated. The vast majority estimated $10,000 or less.

How much revenue do you think my post on here with 124,000,000 views made?

Will share screenshot of rev in 3 days

On Monday, Mr. Beast posted the actual figures the video netted him along with a screenshot as evidence. The total it brought in, to date, is $263,655. “But it’s a bit of a facade,” Mr. Beast explained. “Advertisers saw the attention it was getting and bought ads on my video (I think) and thus my revenue per view is [probably] higher than what [other users would] experience.”

“Elon literally gave you all our ad rev cuz we got NOTHING,” wrote user @scubaryan_.

The internet being what it is, many credited some sort of conspiracy with Mr. Beast’s earnings. “I wonder how so many creators have a glitch where they didn’t get paid three days ago,” asked @dom_lucre.

“This implies $593 per one million impressions which is waaay more than what most people are seeing. Definitely artificially inflated,” asserted @TailosiveTech.

Speaking to logic was @BillyM2K. “All I gotta do is make increasingly high production videos and build a massive audience over the course of many years of grinding and hard work and I could make big money too,” he said sarcastically.

The money seems to be real, though, as Mr. Beast has never reneged on a giveaway yet. The creator has made a name for himself giving away large amounts of cash to fans. In September, he ran a campaign to give away $50,000 to a fan. The giveaways are so ubiquitous that scammers have used the ruse to extort money from victims who believe they’re on the receiving end of a Mr. Beast donation.

A few days before Mr. Beast posted his high-grossing video, he announced that he was giving away $500,000 to a fan, but with one stipulation. “I gave someone $500,000 in cash, but the only catch was for 100 hours I’d do everything in my power to destroy the $500,000,” he wrote.
