For decades, women have faced scrutiny over the size and shape of their derrieres, whereas men have more often been able to fly under the radar when it comes to their own butts. However, a new study conducted by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons has sought out to define the “ideal” male buttocks, and as it turns out, there is a preferred aesthetic among men and women alike.

In coming up with the findings, the authors of the study performed a crowdsourced analysis from over 2,000 respondents who completed a questionnaire rating a panel of digitally altered male buttocks from most to least attractive, based on three distinct anatomical views featuring the lateral, oblique, and posterior. Respondents were also asked to disclose demographic information such as race and sexual orientation, as well as details about their body type, weight, and height.

Of the respondents surveyed, 61 percent were men, 52 percent were between the ages of 25 and 34, and 49 percent were white. And while subsequent analysis revealed differences from respondents based on factors including region, race, sexual orientation, employment industry, and athletic interest; there was “no appreciable difference” found based on gender.

“The authors’ results demonstrate that there is a preferred male gluteal aesthetic,” the study concludes. “This study suggests that men and women favor a more projected male buttock with a more pronounced contour, but preferred a narrow width with defined lateral depression.”

Overall, the findings will have the potential to help cosmetic surgeons advise their male patients on aesthetic gluteal contouring and enhancement techniques, as well as serve as guiding parameters for “optimal results and patient satisfaction.” But beyond the surgical implications, it certainly is interesting to know that when it comes to men and women alike, we love a bubble butt.
