Visitors to North Wilkesboro Speedway in North Carolina have shown up for some exciting races over the years, but the racetrack’s storied history is much deeper than what meets the eye. For decades, locals have spoken of a hidden abandoned moonshine distillery underneath the spectator seats, but officials haven’t been able to confirm its existence. However, they did just find something interesting while completing construction work on the property.

Steve Swift, the senior vice president of operations and development for Speedway Motorsports, gave an interesting update in a March 26 statement

“When we began renovating and restoring North Wilkesboro Speedway in 2022, we’d often hear stories of how an old moonshine still was operated here on the property under the grandstands,” Swift said. “Well, we haven’t found find a still (yet), but we’ve found a small cave and an interior wall that would have been the perfect location to not only make illegal liquor, but to hide from the law as well.”

The tight space is seemingly hard for purported bootleggers to get in, and Swift vowed to keep fans updated as construction crews continue their work. “We don’t know how people would have gotten in and out, but as we uncover more, there’s no telling what we might find,” he said.

The racetrack only has a limited time to keep working. It’s removed about 600 seats from the stands so far and is repairing its foundation and replacing the concrete in advance of NASCAR All-Star Race Week in May. “Now we have a race before the race,” Swift remarked.
