Sometimes the road less traveled isn’t a road at all—or at least, not a paved one. Trail running has become increasingly popular with runners looking to broaden their horizons beyond pavement to recharge their spirits in nature. But, because rocks and loose branches can be hard on regular running shoes it’s worth investing in a good pair of trail runners.

Nike, despite its reputation for basketball and running, has a robust outdoor footwear collection, including the Nike Trail and Nike ACG lines. The Nike Wildhorse 8 is the latest from the brand’s all-purpose trail running shoe line and was recently discounted to as low as $91 from $140 in several colors, and sizes are starting to sell out.

The Wildhorse 8 saw a substantial redesign, with a leaner running-shoe look compared to the aggressive lugs of the previous iteration. The upper features mesh fabric to keep feet comfortable and well-ventilated mid-workout. The midsole utilizes Nike’s React foam, which is designed to be springy for a better response. It also combines running shoe comfort with a grippy chevron tread to feel stable when hitting the ground.

Trail running shoes are a great option for hikers who prefer something streamlined and more nimble than a hefty boot. Nike added a range of outdoor-specific features in addition to the treaded sole that help these shoes perform in tough conditions. This shoe includes a rock plate that protects the bottom of the foot when running over sharp objects. Up top, a reinforced toe overlay protects the upper foot. The shoe is also designed to secure the foot when moving laterally.

Multiple shoppers liked these shoes for challenging runs, including two who mentioned wearing them in Spartan races, and one who specifically liked the “traction on snowy and icy paths.” Another shopper wore them during a 50-mile race and was impressed, writing it was “probably the first ultra I’ve done where my feet didn’t hurt at all.”

The shoes weren’t just popular with ultramarathoners and endurance athletes, though. One shopper bought them for light hikes and found that the shoes “met expectations and exceeded them.” Another “grabbed these for city trekking, light trail work, and an upcoming Disney World trip,” and found that they were “perfect.”

Whether you’re looking for a shoe to trek your local park or log your next ultra, consider picking up the Nike Wildhorse 8 for as much as 30% off the original price. Sizes in some colors are already gone, so if you think this is the best trail shoe for you, grab your size while you still can.
