DMX’s death in 2021 rocked the hip-hop world as artists everywhere looked back on their time spent with the iconic New York rapper. Snoop Dogg collaborated with X several times over the years, and in July 2020, the two joined forces for an unforgettable Verzuz battle. And while Verzuz is all about competition and seeing which artist is the best, it was all love between the two MCs.

Snoop reflected on the post-Verzuz celebration with X in a new interview with Insider. After it was all over, Tha Doggfather whipped up a delicious meal to celebrate.

“I had an amazing time cooking for the late, great DMX,” Snoop recalled. “After we did our Verzuz battle at my studio, he ended up staying here and continuing to work on his album.” His final studio album Exodus was released in May 2021, a month after his death.

While X was in the booth recording, Snoop went to the kitchen and got to cooking. “I put together some short ribs, some rice, some gravy, some corn, and cornbread,” he remembered. “And DMX and [Verzuz co-creator] Swizz Beatz damn near ate the tray, they couldn’t believe how good it was.”

The other guys were so impressed with the food that they wouldn’t let Snoop rest. “I had to cook for them for like three days in a row, and I was honored to do it and I was happy to do it,” Snoop said. “It made me feel good to know I was giving them nourishment and food to go and create a record. That was one of my highlights, to be able to cook for them and for them to enjoy it.”

Snoop has become a household (or rather, kitchen) name since linking up with Martha Stewart for their beloved cooking show Martha & Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party. In 2018, Snoop released his own cookbook, From Crook to Cook: Platinum Recipes from Tha Boss Dogg’s Kitchen. Needless to say the rapper-turned-businessman has a special touch when behind the stove.
