In the past 15 years, toothbrushes have evolved from utilitarian bathroom gear to some of the most advanced tech in our homes. They’re essential to any morning routine, not just because they’re more convenient and leave your mouth feeling cleaner. Electric toothbrushes have crucial benefits for your oral health, too.

An 11-year study of nearly 3,000 people by the Oral Health Institute showed that electric toothbrushes significantly outperform their manual counterparts across the board. Users have significantly less oral plaque and gingivitis, and they have fewer fillings and missing teeth, too. All the options out there can be overwhelming, but we tested them so you don’t have to.

A great electric toothbrush should be quiet, quick, and easy to use. The Philips Sonicare DiamondClean Smart 9300 excelled in each of those attributes, making it our top overall pick. However, for men seeking other features, like an extra-long battery life or different price range, we offer five more superb electric toothbrush options.

How We Tested

I’m a men’s grooming expert who’s been testing and writing about products for nearly 15 years. I’m the former fashion and grooming editor at Men’s Health, and my work has also appeared in Travel + Leisure, Rolling Stone, Bloomberg Pursuits, and more. I started by contacting every major toothbrush manufacturer directly and called in new and best-selling models for testing. I tried all types and prices, but excluded any device without a powered brush head like manual brushes and water pick-style devices. I used each toothbrush morning and night, noting its weight, texture, sounds, lights, brush feel, intensity of vibration, and overall feeling of cleanliness. I also used each brush’s travel case to experience what it’s like to take it on the go. I then balanced my notes with input from industry professionals to create the list you see below.

How to Shop for an Electric Toothbrush

The great thing about all the new electric toothbrush options out there is you’re more likely to find the ideal tool for you. Do you prefer a softer vibration or a more intense clean? A brush head that’s wider or more narrow? Do you like simplicity, or do you want all the bells and whistles? My answer for all of these questions is somewhere in the middle. So, that’s how we began making the list below. But what these electric toothbrushes all have in common is quiet, ultra-fast motors. (The more strokes per minute, the more plaque removed.) They’re also easy to use and will leave your mouth healthier and cleaner-feeling than the rest.

Of course, perhaps the biggest factor is price. Doling out for these new, expensive toothbrushes (one model we tested was more than $400) that used to cost $5 can be tough to legitimize. But just like buying a quality mattress, it’s wise not to skimp on products you use every day and that can improve your health. If you break it down by cost per use and you brush twice a day, a $200 electric toothbrush costs $.05 per use if you keep it for five years. (And, for reference, I’ve kept them for more than seven.)

The biggest benefit here is the overall quality of the brushing experience. Its weight is perfect in your hand. With 31,000 brush strokes per minute, it easily loosens plaque and leaves you feeling squeaky-clean without being too intense. The brush heads keep their shape and integrity for months and clean your gums as well. The whiskey-snifter charging station is hands-down the coolest on the market, and its sleek, sturdy travel case doubles as a charger. Not that you’ll need it—the battery lasts up to two weeks from a single overnight charge, perfect for long trips where power is scarce. It also has a Bluetooth-connected app that tells you where you’re brushing and which spots you’ve missed. It’s an investment, but a smart one considering you’ll be using it at least twice a day. In short, when friends and family ask me which brush they should buy, I tell them this one.

Oral-B offers a ton of dentist-recommended options with varying features, but this model gets you the best mix of features and overall cleaning power at a relatively affordable price. It uses broader strokes than its sonic cousins and a smaller head that can reach where bigger brush heads sometimes can’t. It has a pressure sensor so you can’t brush too hard, which leads to receding gums and, in extreme cases, surgery. But to make sure you hit all the right places, try the Oral-B app that maps your brushing and tells you where you’ve missed. Overall, this is a solid buy.

Comes with: Upright charging stand, travel case
