There’s a reason bags from outdoor brands like Patagonia, The North Face, and Osprey are so ubiquitous on college and corporate campuses. A hiking bag is as useful for carrying trail mix and bear repellent as it is for notebooks and laptops. Many outdoor brands design with this in mind, making it easy to find hiking backpacks with built-in tech sleeves and other commuter-friendly features.

Right now, the 30-liter Patagonia Refugio Daypack is on sale for just $77—a 41% discount on the original $129 price tag. This Patagonia bag blends outdoor tech and commuter convenience, thanks to its combination of hiking and work bag features, including a sternum strap, bungee cords, and a laptop compartment.

The standout feature of this bag isn’t just the dedicated laptop compartment, but also the included removable laptop sleeve. The sleeve features zippered mesh pockets for chargers, pens, notebooks, and other work essentials. The compartment it rests in also has a false bottom to protect against drops.

There are two other zippered compartments on the 30-liter bag. The shallow pocket on top is useful for smaller items such as eyewear cases and snacks, while the main compartment fits everything else, such as lightweight apparel, shoes, or work essentials. The main compartment has no internal organizers, however, so the bag is best suited for those who like a large open space or prefer to use packing cubes to stay organized.

The 30-liter version also features a bungee cord on the outside for external storage. This is ideal for securing items you might need quick access to, such as rain jackets or trekking poles. There are roomy side mesh bottle pockets that are capable of carrying larger water bottles, like 32-ounce Hydro Flasks. An adjustable sternum strap reduces pressure on the shoulders, and there are also compression straps on the side for a secure fit.

Shoppers appreciated the versatility the bag offers in multiple environments, including one shopper who was looking to eliminate the need for multiple bags with a single bag for work and trips. They wrote, “this bag carries everything I need for week-plus long trips (in both tropical and winter environments),” and added that the bag was useful for work, writing, “I easily fit my lunch, laptop, bottles, documents/reference texts and any rain or snow gear.” Another shopper noted, “I use it for work during the week and for day hikes on the weekends.”

The Refugio Daypack from Patagonia is convenient in more ways than one. If you’re unafraid of a pop of color, you can save big on this ultra-versatile accessory. Since the brand is big in the outdoor space, we’re expecting this to sell out soon, so don’t wait to get yours.
