Truffle Fries Recipe

When you think of truffles, you might be thinking of exquisite dishes that incorporate that expensive (yet oh so worth it!) flavor inside! Or you’re thinking about all of the delicious chocolate truffles FoodFaithFitness has helped you make in the past, like carrot cake truffles, mint and avocado truffles, or even our fantastic choco-nana and peanut butter truffles! (Who could blame you? They’re all so TASTY!) Either way, truffles have always been associated with rich, luxurious flavors that don’t quit!

Be it rich chocolate or savory black truffle, the taste associated with “truffles” is undeniably unique! One might be tempted only to use it for elegant eats that could show up on the menu of a Michelin star restaurant. But why save them? After all, we believe there’s a sort of sinful fun in indulgence!

Today, we’re going to combine that drool-worthy decadence with something so seemingly commonplace it feels like sacrilege to savor: truffle french fries!

Truffle fries are offered at a number of restaurants as a delightful dip so you can see what it’s like to combine something so common as french fries with something so luxurious as truffles. But you can make them at home with simple potatoes, a little oil, and a dash of Parmesan! Those fancy restaurant fries might taste expensive, but yours will taste like a luxurious finger-licking feast!

Are Truffle Fries Healthy?

Homemade fries are almost always better for you than anything you can get in a restaurant, primarily because you can choose what kind of oil and how much of it you use to get that crispy exterior on your potatoes! Sometimes, less is more to making your fries better for you! White truffle oil, which we use in our recipe today, can help with heart health, preserve brain function, and regulate your blood sugar. It’s also theorized it helps promote the regulation of testosterone levels, meaning it serves as a slight aphrodisiac!

Truffles, however, are not truly vegan, as the methods used to harvest notoriously hard-to-find truffles often utilize dogs and pigs for their powerful senses of smell. This practice doesn’t sit well with some vegans. That said, if you’re more worried about whether or not the actual food in your truffle fries is vegan, just swap out our suggested Parmesan cheese for a vegan alternative!

Wait, Truffles Aren’t Just A Kind of Chocolate Bon Bon?

Chocolate truffles get their name from the shape they share with the wild fungus we often cultivate for savory dishes! Both look like little dark brown bulbs with a distinct exterior.

Truffles (that is, the truffles we’re using in today’s recipe) are actually subterranean fungus—they’re like underground mushrooms (kinda)! Such an out-of-sight home makes them difficult to harvest, hence the use of sniffer animals, usually pigs, that can pick up on the pheromone-like scent even through the dirt. These distinct aromas and flavors are what make truffle so enticing to gourmet eaters across the globe, finding ways to drizzle it onto everything from picturesque pastas to exquisite slices of ‘za!

FAQs & Tips

How do I prep and store these fries?

Truffle fries are the perfect thing to make ahead of time and store for later, as drizzling your finished fries with truffle oil before putting them in the fridge allows for the truffle oil to really sink into your fries! This infuses them with all that delicious flavor for a truffle-rich bite every time! Reheat your fries in the air fryer before serving, but bear in mind that heating too high may change the truffle oil flavor (as it’s not really meant for cooking in).

Did I hear you mention “black” truffle earlier? What’s the difference between black truffle and white truffle?

Yes! Good catch. Black truffles and white truffles have different flavor profiles, making them perfect for different kinds of dishes! White truffle works with light dishes like potatoes, risotto, and a variety of cheeses, while black truffle complements heavier-flavored dishes like red meat and other hearty meals.

Say someone managed to get their hands on truffle and not truffle oil, can I still make this recipe?

Lucky ducky! Proper truffles can be hard to get your hands on, but if you happen to have them whole rather than in an oil extract, gently grate your bulb over your finished fries while they’re hot. Toss them gently to ensure a thorough coverage and you’ll have the most decadent fries imaginable!
