Charles Biolo, homebrewer extraordinaire and founder of Golden Hive Mead, has been keeping his fans on TikTok updated on his process of brewing Mountain Dew Wine. In his most recent video, Biolo tries his singular concoction for the first time.

Biolo’s Mountain Dew wine journey began early in January. Known for making mead out of irregular items, like strawberries, and prunes and currants, Biolo finally caved to follower demand to ferment Mountain Dew.

In order to make the beverage “more like a normal mead,” he added honey, and yeast which would bring the alcohol content up to 15 percent. He also threw in some baking soda to up the pH balance, which worked spectacularly.

Biolo noted in a follow-up video less than 24 hours later that the concoction was fermenting “pretty rapidly.” He would then leave it “for several weeks” to properly brew.

On Thursday, Biolo offered fans a much-desired update while admitting they’re “not going to be happy” about the progress. “The thing about making wine is, it doesn’t happen overnight,” he explained. “This baby is still fermenting, and probably will be for the next couple of weeks.”

However, he dared to try a sip of his Mountain Dew wine to quench his follower’s curiosity. Noting that the alcohol content was already up to nine percent, more than halfway to the goal of 14.5 percent, Biolo siphoned some into a stemmed glass and swirled it under his nose.

The verdict? “It’s not terrible,” the creator said with some surprise. “It still tastes like Mountain Dew,” he marveled, explaining the fermentation process eliminated the soda’s signature “acidity and tang” while still leaving it “quite sweet.”

“I think this actually has some potential,” Biolo admitted. “I can imagine what the final product would taste like.”

Biolo told viewers that the drink still had a few weeks to ferment to perfect, but teased that he might “have some ideas to speed that up.” If Mountain Dew wine really is as appealing as its inventor makes it look, we may have a new favorite drink come summertime.
