Wild Internet Theory Confirms Connection Between ‘Friends’ and ‘Home Alone’
It’s hardly uncommon for movies and television shows to share the same sets, props, and filming locations. And for dedicated fans, it can feel like an Easter egg when you spot a familiar house or street in a random scene.
Case in point, comedian Scott Westwood—who points out overlooked details and missed jokes from your favorite series on his social media accounts—happened to notice a similarity in the house across the street from the McCallister residence in Home Alone and the one across from the home Chandler and Monica move into in the 10th season of Friends.
“So In just learned that Chandler and Monica from Friends moved into the McCallister’s house from Home Alone,” Westwood says in the short clip posted to Instagram earlier this week.
First, he notes the similarity in the garages that can be seen in both the movie and outside of Chandler and Monica’s front windows. And as further proof, he notes that the front door in the house across the street even has the same exact wreath in both fictional works.
“The Bings could’ve just adopted Kevin after he inevitably gets taken away by child services due to parental neglect,” Westwood quipped in the caption to the video.
For those wondering whether the two sets are indeed simply too similar for it to be a coincidence, you’re absolutely correct. Art director and production designer Daren Janes, who has worked on dozens of filming sets throughout the years, including Friends, confessed in Westwood’s comments.
“This is hilarious … You caught me,” Janes admitted.
“I was the art director on Friends and the house was a set,” he explained. “The actors walked in the front door, so we saw outside. We used the backing from a company called Pacific Studios which was made for Home Alone because it looked the best through the door and windows.”
“Great eye my friend!” Janes added.
