Worker’s Mistake Leads to Bears Raiding Krispy Kreme Doughnuts

Sometimes, a good doughnut from Krispy Kreme can satisfy even the strongest sweet tooth craving. For a group of black bears in Alaska, an abandoned Krispy Kreme van presented the perfect opportunity for a five-star feast.

Candice Sargeant, a store manager at a Krispy Kreme in Anchorage, AK, got an unusual call from one of her delivery drivers. The driver left the van briefly unattended while making a delivery and reported to the store that bears infiltrated the vehicle and were chowing down on the precious cargo.

“For me, I didn’t believe it. I was really astonished,” Sargeant laughed. “There’s no way that bears are in the back of the van, you would think. Doughnuts and bears? And then I was like, ‘OK, well, how do we solve this?'”

Shelly Deano, an employee at the store receiving the doughnuts, helped figure out what was happening.

“I said, ‘He’s in the van!’ and then the little cub followed and went inside the van and they just started eating the doughnuts,” Deano told KTUU. She took some photos of the raid as the family started digging in.

“You could hear them breaking open the packages,” Deano recounted. “We were trying to beat on the van but they just kept eating on the doughnuts. They ate 20 packages of the doughnut holes and I believe six packages of the three-pack chocolate doughnuts.” Finally, the family skulked off after nearby security used sirens to scare them off.

Needless to say, the store’s workers are coming up with new ways to prevent another situation like this in the future.

“We’ll definitely be learning to slide up our ramp [and] close the doors to ensure that bears don’t get back in there again,” Sargeant said.

The bears, meanwhile, are likely continuing their pre-winter hibernation bulk
